Wooden horses with a hatch pattern are sought-after gift items.

She grew up with wood alongside her father, the carver Július Katin. As a child, she spent hours in his workshop and her love for wood never left her. Although she didn’t make it to the desired art school, from maternity leave to the present day, wood carving has been her livelihood. At first, she reproduced her father’s assortment, who at the end of his life created clean shapes in the natural colors of wood.

The direction of her work was influenced by meetings with the artist Janka Menkynová from ÚĽUV, who introduced her to color, the use of traditional ornamentation – not only aesthetically, but also philosophically – and to hatch patterns, which Jana Majerská transformed with her original author’s handwriting. She decorates her products primarily with line and notch carving, colors them through painting and staining, and protects the surface with beeswax or linseed oil or leaves them in their natural finish.

For many years, she has been a tutor for wood carving courses for children and adults at ÚĽUV, and in 2020 she was awarded the title of master of folk art production
