An Endless Line. The story of wire through the ages
Show on map
An exhibition from the “Tradition Untraditionally” cycle.
Wirework is a distinctive phenomenon of Slovak culture that has gained recognition on the international stage. Highlighting the potential for its development in the fields of craftsmanship, design, and, to some extent, the visual arts is one of the goals of the Year of Wirework at ÚĽUV. Just as Slovak wire craftsmen of the past were distinguished by their unique style—they were able to adapt their product range to local needs and successfully earn a living through their work— it is equally important today that wirework remain a living and naturally evolving element of our cultural heritage.
Wire and metal plate have an exceptional visual tradition in Slovakia, naturally bringing together craft discipline, artistic thinking and a designer’s inventiveness. Wireworking has gradually developed from the production of practical objects into an autonomous creative language where material becomes a bearer of rhythm, line and space. This exhibition follows wire as a medium for an artist to let loose their inspiration, on the edge of tradition and experiment, between a technique with clear rules and an independent artistic expression. It is a dialogue between the past and the present, existing within the material, in physical gestures and in artistic courage.
In the spirit of the principle of “traditional untraditionally”, ÚĽUV presents wire as a living medium, which preserves its identity while undergoing constant change. This exhibition brings together artists who work in different situations: from craft precision through sculptural interpretation to a designer’s thinking about space, function and line. This impulse remains relevant for today’s scene: wire persists as a medium which enables precision and playfulness, structure and drawing in space. This exhibition is an invitation to see wireworking not only as a bearer of cultural heritage, but also as a medium which is capable of reacting to today’s visual language.
