Quite a different ÚĽUV

Quite a different ÚĽUV

Jaroslav Ondruška

In 2020, the Centre for Folk Art Production is commemorating its almost venerable 75th anniversary. For younger generations, it might come as a surprise that ÚĽUV has been active in the field of culture since 1945. Over this long period of time, it has succeeded in becoming a cultural phenomenon in Slovakia. Gradually, discreetly, but nevertheless deservedly. The organisation developed and grew over the decades, both in terms of capacity and importance, and has changed significantly over the last three decades. We would like to present one personal opinion on the issue of the organisation’s historical transformations. The dynamics of change were so fundamental that ÚĽUV until the mid-1990s, and ÚĽUV today are essentially two completely different institutions, each of which fulfilled at the time and to the best of its abilities its cultural mission in the field of the protection and development of a living cultural expression: folk art crafts and productions in Slovakia.
