On trunks

Trunks belong to the category of storage furniture. In addition to clothing and textiles, they were also used for storage cereals or food. The oldest type preserved in Slovakia is a hollowed-out trunk made from the trunk of a tree, known as a kadlub. Evidence concerning it dates from the 14th century. Another archaic type are portable containers for cereals hollowed out using a carpentry technique, made out of hardwood with a frame structure known as súsek. The storage of cereals in súsek chests was widespread in the whole Carpathian area. They began to appear in our region to a larger extent in the 16th and 17th centuries. They were also used to store clothing. Súseky for cereals were located in granaries, súsek-type chests for clothing in bedrooms. In the 18th and 19th century, they were exported to Lower Hungary from the Gemer region. In the 18th century, carpentry chests began to appear, followed later by wardrobes, which is why súsek-type chests were also used for storing cereals. Carpentry chests are a more recent type, known in Europe from the Middle Ages already.
