As a lecturer for wood design and shaping at the Secondary School of Utilitarian Art, the author of the article strives to show students how to connect to the traditions of wood processing through homework. He describes the genesis of two tasks in his article. One of these is a child’s toy carved from poplar from which a bigger collection of larger toys can be created. The other topic is furniture inspired from folk art, where students are challenged to find shapes that although not direct copies of folk models nevertheless still represent a connection with the tradition. The author states that some of the results of this homework could also be used in mass production. (All displayed works are by students.)
