Jozef and his knives

Xénia Lettrichová

Academic sculptor Jozef Lupták has been restoring metallic historic artefacts for thirty years; he concentrates on the creation of unique jewellery, modest sculptures, and that everlasting dream of small boys – the creation of knives. Lupták’s knives are autonomous artistic works, not replicas or historical imitations. The blades are prepared from damascene steel using historical technology, where steel strings containing many fibres are layered with the metal. These create a characteristic graphical network on the surface. He has also investigated the results of previously unused materials such as bicycle chains. In contrast, the smooth and attractive handle of the knife combines metal elements with various materials.
