On the surface

In recent years we are increasingly discovering interesting examples of interconnection between contemporary design thinking and existing traditional artwork in the world. Earthenware, majolica and porcelain dishes in conjunction with graphic design, design and art is a very interesting territory.

In Slovakia, there are many examples of implementing cooperation. The collection of origin tableware Wild – series of dining items by the designer Lucia Pelikantová is interesting because of the juicy illustrated surfaces. The author created a pattern like an illustration in which she varied figures of animals and plants but also small utility objects. The ultimate expression was supported by distinctive red-green colour.

Modranska collection, which brings together graphic designers Ľubica Segečová, Pavlína Morháčová, Paľo Bálik, Janka Bálik and a designer and a producer Jakub Liška, is based on efforts to redefine the classic originals coming from Slovakia’s most famous ceramic brand with historical background (Modra ceramics) to give ceramic a contemporary expression, to show its potential for the future. The authors would like to build on the original designs, motifs and ornaments, while preserving majolica technology, but at the same time they were not afraid to step into, redesign and edit them.
