Schmuck 2013

Jana Machatová

Chamber of handicrafts for Munich and Upper Bavaria has already been organizing the art jewellery display Schmuck within the international crafts fair in Munich for 65 years. Over the years, it became a holiday, the meeting place of artists, gallerists, curators and collectors. From the trade fair premises a jewel gradually expanded to the entire city. Artists open their studios to the public, renting shop windows, exhibit in galleries, clubs, cultural centres.

Each year Herbert Hoffmann prize attracts the attention of a jeweller public – in 2013, 595 authors from around the world have competed in it, the exhibition has received work from 57 of them. This time the choice was entrusted to Swiss Jewelers Bernhard Schobinger, known for his provocative and unconventional works. Slovakia nominated Andrea Ďurianová to the shortlist drawn.

The Schmuck exhibition showcases the latest and perhaps the best that is in the world of jewellery just going and despite the personal selection it shows the current trends. For several years we can see an abandonment of traditional materials and techniques, use of wood is popular and decors are becoming a defining feature. Limits of jewellery, design, fine craft and jewellery design are becoming unclear, the author’s approach is disappearing, it is difficult to identify the author´s handwriting.
