Colour in Architecture – Reminiscences and the Present

Andrea Urlandová

Looking at the past is a source of information on the colour of architecture for the present; it often provides an explanation for how it looks today, but can also be an inspiration for the future. In general, we may say that there is a strong link between expressions of colour in architecture and the society and period of their creation. Colour is naturally associated with locations as part of traditions, a local or regional visual identity, contributing to the shaping of a genius loci; it is associated with an environment, a life, a philosophy, vision and perception, with light. Examining the colour in architecture as an essential part of its appearance confirms the fact that colour is linked to change. At certain periods, these changes were slower, at others, they were faster, with various factors playing a role.
