The Fujara Shepherd’s Pipe and its Art

The Fujara Shepherd’s Pipe and its Art

Ľuboš Straka

The process of the artistic finish or the development of an item’s ornamentation is always closely linked to the instrument itself. The fujara, a large three-hole pipe composed of a long, cylindrical pipe tube and an attached, shorter and thinner air channel, is the symbol of free thinking in the environment of the shepherd’s huts of the Podpoľanie region. Although it has long since spread beyond the shepherd’s huts and the region, it still retains its specific internal features which developed not only from its environment, but also with the passage of time. Its original archaic features have gradually been replaced by new artistic approaches and trends. And what makes the fujara exceptional is not just its sound, but also its artistic finish.
