Out of the whole colour spectrum, we consider white to be ordinary, unworthy of attention. It only rarely captivates our senses. Nevertheless, it accompanies people from their birth until their death, and it has retained its symbolism in the human mind until today. White is the symbol of light, innocence, purity, but it also represents mourning and the end of life. It was dominant in folk clothing, and was used for baptisms and weddings. The original mourning colour of white in traditional colours was replaced by black during the 19th century – partly through the influence of the fashion of the ruling class.
