Visual expressions of folk tradition did not vanish from the cultural scene even after their gradual disappearance in their original, authentic peasant and shepherd settings. They changed and varied over time, reflecting and supporting in the given historical and social context different cultural and aesthetic ideas and criteria. Similarly, the relation to folk tradition also changed in the public eye and in opinion-forming circles. It veered between admiring and respecting it to undermining and rejecting it.
