The aesthetic and semantic potential of wood in contemporary jewellery (part 2)

Mária Hriešik Nepšinská

Thanks to its variety of historical uses, and its close association with many spheres of our experiences and environment (trees, dwellings, furniture, instruments, household items), wood lends itself easily to intensive material research and interpretation. It attracts many artists for conceptual and aesthetic reasons. Whether they are carving wood, painting it, recycling it or handling it in any other way, they are pushing back the frontiers of how we perceive this closely known material. In the context of contemporary jewellery-making, this concerns mainly the re-evaluation and reconstruction of the system of values of decorative objects, and also the creation of a new type of valuables which could give an immediate expression of problems that are meaningful for jewellery-makers and their public alike. In her article, the author describes the work of the following designers: Liv Blåvarp, Julia Turner, Karla Olšáková, Despo Sophocleous, Barbora Jamrichová, Tobias Alm, Ted Noten, Mette T. Jensen, Gustav Reyes, Christina Karababa and Kristýna Španihelová.
