Intended for the producers’ own consumption, industrial flax has been grown, in our lands, since ancient times. As late as the 19th century, almost all traditional clothing articles, especially women’s clothing articles, were made of linen cloth varying in thickness and quality. In addition to clothing articles, woven linen textiles were used in households (bed linen, sheets, curtains providing privacy to women during childbirth, various covers and blankets, towels) and for work (sacks including those for carrying grass, horse blankets). Linen cloth was not only practical, it was also economical. Across most demesnes, the serfs were paying their feudal lords in kind, with sheaves of flax.
