Jurkovič’s early work was strongly influenced by folk art culture. Its influence expressed itself in his architectural work in the overall nature and structure of the buildings, as well as in the design of furniture and ornamentation. Jurkovič’s understanding of decoration changed. From adopting and combining original folk motifs, he moved on to creating his own, unique decorative style, combining traditional, Secession and modernist elements. With the new challenges resulting from the First World War, his decorative approach gave way to practicality and a restrained form of expression.
