Decorative expression in gingerbread-making in Slovakia

Daša Ferklová

In the past, wooden moulds were used for making gingerbread, achieving a remarkable artistic level with their woodcut decorative style. Many surviving examples are artistic gems of the art of woodcarving. The sales of gingerbread often did not depend on the quality of the dough, but on their shape and decorative ornamentation. Despite the fact that pressed gingerbreads were gradually replaced by gingerbread cut using metal cutters, decoration is one of the aspects which continue to make gingerbread popular today.
