Oľga Kotercová grew up and spent her whole life in the distinctive village of Čičmany (Žilina district) in the Strážovské hills. Drawn-thread embroidery, also called cut hole or Žilina work was typical of this village in the past. Oľga Kotercová learnt the art of Čičmany embroidery as a child from her mother Veronika Čechová, who worked together with other local embroiderers for the Centre for Folk Art Production. She beginning devoting herself fully to this craft after her retirement in 2002. She gradually progressed from the simple embroidery of contours to technically more demanding drawn-thread work.
