Inspired by ornamentation

Jana Majerská

Jana Majerská has been working with wood since childhood, partly thanks to her father Július Katina, who was a folk woodcarver. Despite the fact that she was a girl, he supported her in her hobby and her love for wood. She found much inspiration in her surroundings. One of the key factors in her development was the beginning of her work with ÚĽUV which forced her to reflect on her own work. She was influenced by her study of literature, as well as by her meeting with the artist Janka Menkynová, who suggested colouring her work. A coloured product was begging for decoration, and this led to trying out Kyjatice patterns. Their basic premise is carving using a compass and semi-circular chisel: this is a line cut used to create various geometrical shapes. By studying the meaning of the motifs and patterns, the ornamentation gained a new dimension; a message can be left on each one. Her product range includes buttons, wash-boards, mirror cases, as well as nativity scenes and Christmas decorations in the shape of a heart, circle or angel. They are decorated using Kyjatice patterns in various colours: red, white, blue, green, brown, orange and black.
