The richly decorative stone tombs from the north-west of the Novohrad region are one of the most remarkable artistic expressions of this region, and further afield. In the mid-1870s, there was a boom in folk stonemasonry in the north-western part of Novohrad, where it meets the Hont and Podpoľanie regions. Compared to the adjacent Hont region, stonemasonry in this part of Novohrad did not take on the shape of decorated elements of folk architecture, but showed itself almost exclusively in richly shaped and decorated folk tombstones, used by Lutherans of the Augsburg confession to mark the graves of their deceased family members.
