Ornamentation admired and rejected

Oľga Danglová

Ornamentation and decoration provide pure joy from the play between material, object and its decoration by drawing, painting, engraving, compositional and colour designs, characteristic of the given culture and period. Ornamentation can be characterised as decoration formed by the rhythmic, symmetrical, proportional repetition of abstract or stylised elements and motifs which embellish the object, and, when combined with technical solutions, adapt to the material of which the object is made. Decoration and decorative art include a decorative style or pattern, such as the choice of items and their composition when furnishing an interior with a deliberate selection of specific expressive symbols. We come across the use of simple decorations or the careful embellishment of the body, clothing, objects or buildings with ornamentation in all almost all cultures, regardless of period or place.
