Textile triennial in Liptovský Mikuláš

Zuzana Gažíková

Since the august, the P. M. Bohúň Gallery in Liptovský Mikuláš has been the host of the first year of the Textile Triennial. It will remain on display until 3 December. All together there were 46 participating artists from 15 European countries. The idea of preparing the textile triennial emerged from a simple premise – to persuade the public that even after a long period of time during which interest in textile art has been declining, this field deserves and has all the prerequisites to return to not only exhibition events but also to the private and public arena. The main initiative for organizing the Triennial of Textile Art started at the Arttex association. Arttex Studio has the ambition to prepare a workshop in Liptovský Mikuláš next year because that is where the technological base for production is situated. The main focus will be to change the perception of textiles being merely a hanging picture – there are many new and varied possibilities in relation to clothes, statues, etc. The conditions for participation were clearly defined. Because the borders of what is considered textile art are very wide, this field often overlaps with others. One of the main conditions for participation was the requirement that the exhibit would consist of at least 50% textile.
