In the 18th and the 19th centuries the local production of woven fabrics had its boom. While in western and central Slovakia a big role had been played by lace and embroidery in their ornament, in eastern Slovakia these techniques had not been very well developed. Therefore, decoratively woven fabrics had become characteristic for this region thus making eastern Slovakia an important weaving centre. All over eastern Slovakia, but especially in the regions of Vranov nad Topľou, Prešov and Trebišov the so-called faggoting and openwork weave had been popular until recently.
It was already in the 1960’s that the ÚĽUV artists had discovered the original production of faggoting and openwork woven fabrics and started slowly applying both these techniques in their designs of table textiles suitable for everyday as well as festive occasions. Their designs were implemented by several highly skilled female weavers from eastern Slovakia. At present the production of household fabrics for the interior with faggoting and openwork patterns is made by Mária Tomisová of Družstevná pri Hornáde and Amália Schönová of Čierny Balog, both being masters of folk art production in weaving.
