The artistic blacksmith learned under master Ľubomír Karenovič. He then worked as a blacksmith at a company that produced fences. Fortunately for his personal development, two years later he was accepted into the workshop of the great German blacksmith master Manfred Bergmeister in Ebersberg. In this workshop, which had four masters among twenty employees and where old blacksmithing techniques were used, mistakes were not tolerated and only well-performed work was valued, which was a great school for him.

Upon returning from Germany, he set up his own blacksmith workshop and focuses mainly on artistic restoration. For ÚĽUV, he produces bowls, plates, trays, pots, and sculptures based on the designs of the artist Janka Menkynová.

In 2010, Jozef Tomčala received the title of master of folk art production for preserving and developing blacksmithing ironwork and the production of utility objects from copper.
