Hand processing of wool

During the 20th century, household wool processing almost disappeared. With the decline of domestic wool production, the skills passed down from generation to generation also vanished. In the current trend of returning to natural materials and a healthier way of life, there is a gradual renewal of interest in sheep farming, especially in smaller herds. This guide aims to support the revitalization of home wool processing from small flocks. It describes the basic knowledge about wool, its properties, but mainly about individual processing steps, from shearing the wool from sheep, through proper drying, storage, washing, carding, dyeing, spinning, twisting, plying, all the way to processing fibers into yarn. The publication is complemented by detailed photographic documentation of the individual wool processing steps. The introduction includes a brief historical overview of traditional sheep farming and home wool processing in the past.
